Why you get razor bumps and ingrowns
Short answer
A shaved hair with a sharp tip curls back into the skin and your body inflames around it. Curly and coarse hair does this far more, and no product fixes a technique problem. Shave with the grain, never stretch the skin taut, use a single blade or an electric trimmer, and add a chemical exfoliant two or three times a week to keep the follicle clear.
Why it happens to some people and not others
The hair follicle determines it. A curved follicle produces a curved hair, and a curved hair that has been cut to a sharp point curls back toward the skin instead of growing straight out. It either re-enters the surface or never exits at all, and either way the immune system treats it as a foreign body and inflames around it.
This is why it affects coarse, curly and coily hair far more, why it is so common on Black men's necks and jawlines that it has its own name, pseudofolliculitis barbae, and why it concentrates on the bikini line and underarms where hair is coarsest.
It is not a hygiene issue, it is not an infection to begin with, and it is not something you are doing wrong in an obvious way. It is the geometry of a curved hair meeting a blade.
The shaving changes that do most of the work
This section matters more than any product on the page.
- Shave with the grain, not against it. Against the grain cuts the hair below the skin surface, which is exactly what creates an ingrown.
- Do not stretch the skin taut. Pulling the skin means the cut hair retracts under the surface when you let go.
- Use a single blade or a safety razor. Multi-blade cartridges work by lifting and cutting below the surface, which is the whole problem.
- Consider not shaving to the skin at all. An electric trimmer leaving very short stubble prevents this almost entirely and is the standard dermatology advice for severe cases.
- Shave at the end of a warm shower, when hair is softened and the follicle is relaxed.
- Replace blades often. A dull blade tugs, and tugging causes both irritation and bad cuts.
- Shave less frequently if you can. Every other day beats daily.
Products that help, and one that does not
Exfoliation keeps the follicle opening clear so the hair can get out, and reduces the dead skin that traps it.
- Salicylic acid or glycolic acid, applied two or three times a week, not daily. This is the main event.
- A leave-on liquid rather than a scrub. Scrubs irritate freshly shaved skin and make the bumps redder.
- Benzoyl peroxide if bumps are becoming genuinely infected and pustular.
- Fragrance-free moisturiser. Dry skin around the follicle traps hair more easily.
- For deeper skin, azelaic acid or niacinamide alongside, because the marks last longer than the bumps.
Do not tweeze or dig them out. Extracting an ingrown breaks the skin, introduces bacteria, and turns a bump that would have resolved in a week into a mark that lasts months. If a hair is visibly looped above the surface you can free the loop with a sterile needle without pulling the hair out, but that is the limit of it.
The marks left behind
For a lot of people the dark spots outlast the bumps by months and are the actual complaint. Each inflamed bump triggers pigment production, and on deeper skin that response is stronger and slower to fade.
Treat them as a separate job: stop the new bumps first, because fading marks while creating fresh ones does not work, then use azelaic acid, niacinamide, or a targeted pigment treatment, plus sunscreen on any exposed area. Eight to twelve weeks is realistic and older marks take longer.
Underarm and bikini darkening from repeated shaving works the same way, and the fix is the same: reduce the irritation first.

Questions people also ask
How do I stop razor bumps?
Shave with the grain, do not stretch the skin taut, use a single blade or an electric trimmer rather than a multi-blade cartridge, and shave less often. Add a leave-on salicylic or glycolic acid two or three times a week to keep the follicle clear.
Should I shave against the grain for a closer shave?
No, if you get razor bumps. Against the grain cuts the hair below the skin surface, which is precisely what allows it to grow back into the skin.
Should I pull out an ingrown hair?
No. Digging it out breaks the skin, risks infection, and leaves a dark mark that lasts far longer than the bump would have. If the hair is visibly looped above the surface you can free the loop with a sterile needle without plucking it.
Why do I get ingrown hairs on my bikini line?
Hair there is coarse and the follicles are curved, so cut hairs curl back into the skin easily. Tight clothing over freshly shaved skin makes it worse by pressing the hair against the surface.
Do razor bumps leave dark marks?
Often, especially on deeper skin. Each inflamed bump triggers pigment production. Stop the new bumps first, then treat the marks with azelaic acid or niacinamide and daily sunscreen on exposed areas. Expect eight to twelve weeks.
