Dark marks that last for months after a breakout

Short answer

Flat brown or black marks left after a breakout are post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH. They are pigment, not scars, and they do fade. Treat the acne first, then use azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, alpha arbutin or a gentle retinoid, and wear sunscreen daily. Expect eight to twelve weeks minimum, and three to six months for older marks.

Is it a mark or a scar?

This decides everything, and people use the word scar for both.

  • Flat and discoloured, brown, black or purple, level with the surrounding skin. That is pigment. It will fade, and the products below work.
  • Indented or raised, a dip or a bump you can feel. That is textural scarring. Topicals will not fix it. That needs procedures such as microneedling, lasers or subcision from a professional.

Run a finger over it with your eyes closed. If you cannot feel it, it is pigment and you are in the right place.

Treat the acne first

This is the step people skip and it is the reason progress stalls. Every new breakout creates a new mark, usually faster than your serum is fading the old ones. You cannot win that race.

If you are still breaking out, sort that first or in parallel. Adapalene, benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid all have strong evidence. Azelaic acid is the efficient choice here because it treats the breakout and the mark at the same time.

Picking is the other half of this. A spot you leave alone leaves a mark for weeks. A spot you squeeze leaves one for months. A hydrocolloid patch over it costs about twenty five cents and mostly works by stopping you touching it.

What actually fades pigment

IngredientWhat it doesNotes
Azelaic acid 10 to 20%Treats acne and pigment togetherGenerally pregnancy friendly, confirm with your doctor
Tranexamic acidInterrupts pigment signallingThe one dermatologists reach for with melasma
Alpha arbutinSlows pigment productionVery gentle, safe for deeper skin, slow
NiacinamideSupporting player, barrier and toneCheap, safe with almost everything
RetinoidsSpeeds cell turnoverNot in pregnancy. Expect a purge for the first weeks
Vitamin CAntioxidant, supports sunscreenCan sting. Lower percentages work nearly as well

Add one at a time, roughly a week apart. Stacking four actives in week one is how people end up with a wrecked barrier and more marks than they started with.

Why gentler works faster on deeper skin

This is the most important thing on this page and it is counterintuitive.

In melanin rich skin, inflammation itself triggers pigment production. That means the aggressive approach, high strength acids, physical scrubs, three actives at once, actively creates new dark marks while you are trying to remove old ones. People end up running to stand still.

The slow, boring, low irritation routine genuinely reaches the goal first. If a product stings, burns or leaves you red, it is working against you.

Brands built with this in mind, including Topicals, Eadem and Urban Skin Rx, tend to formulate at gentler strengths for exactly this reason.

Covering it while it fades

Fading pigment takes months. Nobody should have to look at a mark they dislike for that whole time on principle, and a concealer is not cheating: it does not slow the treatment down or make the mark worse.

What matters is that it is a real full coverage concealer rather than a brightening under-eye one. Brightening formulas are built to reflect light, which on a flat dark mark makes it more visible rather than less. Match it to your own depth instead of going lighter, and press it on with a fingertip rather than blending it out, so the coverage stays where the mark is.

Two things to keep straight. Cover the mark, treat the cause, and do not let the covering become the reason you stop treating. And if you are using a retinoid or a strong acid, put the concealer on over a moisturiser rather than straight onto freshly treated skin.

Sunscreen is half the treatment

If you are treating dark spots without daily sunscreen, you are bailing out a boat with a hole in it. UV drives pigment production directly, so every unprotected day undoes work your serum did overnight.

The most common reason people skip it is white cast, which is a completely valid complaint and a solved problem. Our guide to sunscreen without white cast covers the formulas that actually disappear on deep skin.

Questions people also ask

How long does post inflammatory hyperpigmentation take to fade?

Eight to twelve weeks minimum with consistent treatment and daily sunscreen, and three to six months for older or deeper marks. Untreated, PIH can take a year or more to fade on its own.

Are dark marks after acne permanent?

No. Flat discoloured marks are pigment and they fade. Indented or raised marks are textural scarring, which is permanent without professional treatment such as microneedling or lasers.

What is the best ingredient for acne dark marks on Black skin?

Azelaic acid is the most efficient because it treats active acne and existing pigment at once. Tranexamic acid and alpha arbutin are also well tolerated. Avoid harsh scrubs and high strength acids, because irritation causes more pigment.

Does vitamin C help with post acne marks?

It helps as a supporting ingredient, mainly by protecting against further UV driven pigment alongside sunscreen. It is not the main event. Azelaic, tranexamic acid or alpha arbutin do more of the actual fading.
