Hair
Protein or moisture: the wet strand test that settles it
Short answer
Wet a shed strand and stretch it gently. If it snaps almost immediately with no stretch, your hair needs moisture. If it stretches a long way and does not spring back, or feels soft and gummy, it needs protein. Getting this backwards is the single most common reason a routine that was working suddenly stops.
Why this is so confusing
Protein overload and moisture deficiency produce almost identical symptoms. Both leave hair feeling dry, rough, brittle and dull. So people who are already protein overloaded reach for more protein, because their hair feels dry, and things get worse.
The mirror cannot tell you which one you have. A wet strand can.
The stretch test
- Take a shed strand, from your brush or the shower drain. Do not pull one out.
- Wet it thoroughly.
- Hold it at both ends and pull gently.
- Watch what it does.
| What the wet strand does | What it means | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Snaps at once, no stretch | Too much protein, or simply very dry | Moisture. Deep conditioner with no protein, for a month |
| Stretches a long way, stays stretched, feels gummy | Not enough protein, structure is weak | Protein or bond repair treatment |
| Stretches a little and springs back | Balanced. This is the goal | Keep doing what you are doing |
Signs of protein overload
- Hair feels stiff, crunchy or straw like even right after conditioning
- It looks dull and will not take shine
- It snaps rather than stretches
- It got worse after you started using repair or strengthening products
- Styles will not hold and curls look rough rather than defined
The fix is to stop all protein for four to six weeks. That means checking your labels, because protein hides in a lot of products under names like hydrolysed wheat, keratin, collagen, amino acids and silk. Use a moisture only deep conditioner weekly and let the hair recover.
Signs of moisture overload
Less common but real, and sometimes called hygral fatigue. It happens to people who deep condition constantly and never use protein.
- Hair feels limp, mushy or overly soft when wet
- Curls have gone stringy and lost their shape
- It stretches a long way when wet and does not bounce back
- It takes forever to dry and feels heavy
The fix is a protein or bond treatment, then a return to alternating.
How to keep the balance
Most people do well alternating. Deep moisture weekly, protein every third or fourth wash. If you are heavily processed, closer to every other wash.
Reassess with the stretch test every couple of months, and any time your routine suddenly stops working. Hair changes with the seasons, with new colour, and with a new water supply if you move.
