Why your deodorant stops working by midday
Short answer
Sweat itself is nearly odourless. The smell comes from bacteria breaking down the protein-rich sweat produced by apocrine glands in the underarm. Deodorant addresses bacteria and does nothing about wetness, and antiperspirant does the opposite. If yours dies by lunch, the usual causes are applying to damp skin, applying in the morning rather than at night, or using the wrong one of the two.

Natural deodorants are deodorants. They contain no aluminium and therefore do not reduce sweating, and buying one to solve a wetness problem is a guaranteed disappointment regardless of how good the formula is.
Why night application works better
This is counterintuitive and it is the change that fixes the most cases.
Antiperspirant works by forming a plug in the sweat duct, and it needs time on relatively dry skin to do that. Applied in the morning, especially after a hot shower onto skin that is already producing sweat, much of it washes away before it can form the plug.
At night, sweat production drops considerably, so the product has hours to work. The plug persists through showering the next morning and typically lasts a day or two. You do not need to reapply in the morning, and doing so is largely wasted.
Why a natural deodorant works for a fortnight and then stops
Common and there are two separate explanations.
Many natural deodorants rely on raising skin pH, usually with baking soda, to make the underarm inhospitable to odour bacteria. Skin buffers back toward its normal pH of around 5 over time, and once it does, the odour returns. The formula has not degraded, your skin has re-equilibrated.
Separately, the underarm microbiome shifts after stopping an antiperspirant. Reducing sweat for years changes which bacteria dominate, and when sweat returns to normal there is an adjustment period, often two to four weeks, during which odour is genuinely worse before settling.
If you are switching, expect that transition rather than concluding in week two that it failed. If it has not settled after about a month, the formula is not working for your body chemistry and a different active is worth trying.
The things that make more difference than the product
- Apply to completely dry skin. Damp skin is the most common reason application fails.
- Underarm hair holds bacteria and moisture. Trimming rather than removing entirely is a reasonable middle ground.
- Use an antibacterial or acid wash on the underarm. Benzoyl peroxide once or twice a week, or a body wash with glycolic or mandelic acid, reduces the bacterial load directly.
- Change out of sweaty clothes rather than letting them dry on you. Bacteria continue working in the fabric.
- Wash gym clothes properly. Synthetic fabrics hold odour bacteria and reappear smelling within minutes of being worn.
- Diet has a real effect for some people, particularly garlic, onion, cumin, alcohol and red meat.
Persistent strong odour that does not respond to any of this, or a sudden change in body odour, is worth a doctor's appointment. It is occasionally a sign of something else, including a bacterial overgrowth that responds to treatment.
