Dark underarms: what actually causes them and what to do

Short answer

In a lot of cases it is not pigment at all. Stubble under thin skin reads as shadow, and friction plus deodorant irritation account for most of the rest. Try a gentler fragrance free or AHA deodorant and stop close shaving for a month before you spend money on actives. Never use lemon juice, baking soda, toothpaste or bleach. They cause chemical burns and burns heal darker.

Work out which cause you have first

This is the step everyone skips, and it is why so many people spend a year on products that were never going to help.

What to actually use

If you have ruled out shaving and irritation and you are dealing with real pigment, these are the options that have evidence behind them.

  • A gentle chemical exfoliant, two or three times a week. Lactic or a mild AHA. Not a scrub.
  • Niacinamide or azelaic acid applied nightly.
  • A cleansing bar with kojic acid, such as Urban Skin Rx Even Tone, which is formulated for melanin rich skin and is the most commonly recommended starting point.
  • A deodorant with an AHA, such as Nécessaire or Salt and Stone, which exfoliates gently while it deodorises.
  • Patience. Eight to twelve weeks minimum, and three to six months for long standing pigment.
Never apply an active to freshly shaved skin. Wait at least a day. Shaving removes the top layer, and putting acid on that is how people end up with chemical burns that heal darker than what they started with.

Things the internet recommends that make it worse

Every one of these turns up constantly in comment sections and every one of them is a bad idea.

  • Lemon juice. Acidic enough to burn, and photosensitising, so sun exposure afterwards causes a reaction called phytophotodermatitis that leaves darker marks.
  • Baking soda. Highly alkaline, wrecks your skin barrier, and is a leading cause of underarm irritation in natural deodorants.
  • Toothpaste. Not formulated for skin at all.
  • Bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Chemical burn risk on thin underarm skin.
  • Aggressive scrubbing. Irritation causes pigment. You are creating the problem you are treating.

There is also a large unregulated market in imported skin lightening creams, some of which contain mercury or undeclared steroids. If you want prescription strength fading, get it prescribed.

When to see a doctor

Most dark underarms are cosmetic and harmless. Two situations are worth a proper look.

  • Velvety, thickened dark patches that appeared over months, especially if they are also on the back of your neck, in your groin or in skin folds. This can be acanthosis nigricans, which is associated with insulin resistance and is worth a conversation with a doctor.
  • It has been there as long as you can remember and nothing shifts it. A few underlying conditions present this way and several are treatable.

Questions people also ask

Why are my armpits dark even though I shave?

Often because you shave. Close shaving leaves stubble under thin skin that reads as shadow, and repeated razor irritation causes real pigment over time. Try trimming instead of close shaving for a month and see what changes.

Does deodorant cause dark underarms?

It can. Fragrance, alcohol and baking soda are common irritants, and repeated irritation causes post inflammatory pigmentation. Switching to a fragrance free or baking soda free formula for a month is the cheapest thing to try.

How long does it take to lighten dark underarms?

Eight to twelve weeks at minimum with consistent use, and three to six months for long standing pigment. Anything promising faster results is either very strong, unregulated, or not telling the truth.

Is lemon juice good for dark underarms?

No. It is acidic enough to burn thin underarm skin and it is photosensitising, so sun exposure afterwards can cause a reaction that leaves the area darker than before.
